What is it?

Shamanism is a range of traditional beliefs and practices concerned with communication with the spirit world. A practitioner of shamanism is known as a shaman. Shamans are spiritual beings with the ability to heal, work with energies, and see visions. The essential characteristics of shaman are mastery of energy and fire as a medium of transformation. There are many variations of shamanism throughout the world; the following are beliefs shared by all forms of shamanism:

  • Spirits exist and they play important roles both in individual lives and in human society.
  • The shaman can communicate with the spirit world.
  • Spirits can be good or bad.
  • The shaman can treat sickness caused by negative spirits.
  • The shaman can employ trance inducing techniques to incite visionary ecstacy.
  • The shaman’s spirit can leave the body to enter the supernatural world to search for answers.
  • The shaman evokes animal images as spirit guides, omens, and message-bearers.

Shamanism is based on the premise that the visible world is pervaded by invisible forces or spirits which affect the lives of the living. In contrast to organized religions like animism or animatism, which are lead by priests and which all members of a society practice, shamanism requires individualized knowledge and special abilities. Shamans operate outside established religions, and traditionally, they operate alone. Shaman can gather into associations as Indian tantric practitioners have done.

How does it work?

The shaman plays the role of healer in shamanic societies. They gain knowledge and power by traversing the axis mundi and bringing back knowledge from the heavens. Oftentimes the shaman has, or acquires, one or more familiar helping entities in the spirit world; these are often spirits in animal form, spirits of healing plants, or (sometimes) those of departed shamans.

While the causes of disease are typically considered to have physical causes, spiritual methods are used by the Shaman to heal. The shaman often will “enter” the body of their patient to find the spirit making the patient sick and heal them by removing the infectious spirit.

However, many shamans have expert knowledge of the plant life in their area and an herbal regimen is often prescribed as treatment. In many places the shamans claim to learn from the plants directly; during this tutelage and partnership, the plant spirit teaches the shaman the effects it has, uses for healing, and receiving permissible times that the plant may be used for healing.

Why is it for me?

When we have had traumas or illnesses, part of us can become lost and can in-turn be carrying misplaced energies in its place. This is where a soul retrieval or animal retrieval can be appropriate for healing and eliminating misplaced energy in the body.

Soul retrieval– someone has had a trauma of any kind parts of their soul or spirit leaves: I will go back and find those missing pieces and reconnects them into a whole.

Animal retrieval– animal guides, protectors: I will find your animal guide which will help you face your challenges. Your animal guide will loan you their energy and strength so you can move forward and break through patterns.

By working with nature and elementals this will help free you from what you’re carrying. These healings address the spiritual aspect of illness.

Most people who seek out the help of a Shaman have tried other things and just haven’t found the results they are looking for.
